We are pleased to announce the launch of Shikumen’s fourth location on the first floor of Dorsett City Hotel in Aldgate located within the contemporary Matrix building.
Shikumen Aldgate will be the first central London location for the popular restaurant following opening in Ealing (2015), Shepherd’s Bush (2015) and Finchley Road (2016) and unusually for a Chinese restaurant it will be open from 6.30am (7am on Sunday) offering hotel residents, local professionals and locals a Chinese breakfast and weekend brunch menu. Residents will also be able to order room service from the Michelin recognised menu that includes the Scallop Siu Mai Topped with Tobiko Dim Sum (image below).
As in their other restaurants the interior similarly echoes the unique architecture of 1940s Shanghai (Shikumen meaning stone gate). Furnishings of dark wood and colonial-style shutters create an intimate and elegant dining room in the smallest Shikumen of the group hidden away on the first floor of the hotel. The dining room provides up to 80 covers and offers diners views over the 18th century St Botolph’s Church.
Shikumen Aldgate has opened with a 50% off food only offer during their soft launch period. This offer is available now until the end of September.
“Xiao Long Bao are a test of the skill of a dumpling chef and here they were delicately pleated, surely at least 18 times, lusciously drenched in stock, superb.” Evening Standard – Fay Maschler
“I rolled the dumpling into a spoon, nipped it with my teeth and drank the hot, rich stock…the soup dumpling was delicious” The Times – Giles Coren
***** (5 stars) “Exquisitely steamed, baked, and fried dishes ranging from classic har gau and xiao long bao to more sophisticated items such as scallop siu mai topped with tobiko and cheung fun filled with prawn and beancurd skin. The latter was a revelation, each mouthful exploding into a sensual mix of sweet, briny flavours and crisp textures” Time Out London
“The great xiao long bao, whose beautiful broth is only just contained by…miraculously thin pastry” Mail on Sunday – Tom Parker-Bowles
“We were here for the Peking Duck and the Dim Sum – and neither disappointed” Financial Times – Nicholas Lander
