Ekachai to bring SE Asia to Flat Iron Square

Ekachai Dishes

We are proud to announce Ekachai restaurant is bringing South East Asia to Flat Iron Square with a specially designed rope-wrapped, bamboo-roofed, timber-clad kitchen serving authentic street food.

The Ekachai kitchen features a bespoke dumpling steamer, satay grill, stainless steel wok range and hammered metal cooking pot pendants that illuminate the service area. Their short menu is split into two sections with the best of classic Thai, Malay and Cantonese street food dishes focused on the wok cooking synonymous with hawker food from these regions.  Additionally a regularly changing Specials board will offer diners continued variety suited to the season. 
Wok Fried: Penang-Style Char Kway Teow, Nasi Goreng (served with spiced crackers and sambal chilli sauce), Pad Thai (served with peanuts, chilli and lime)
Little Plates: Prawn and Scallop Sui Man, Potsticker Dumplings (pork and ginger or vegetable), Chicken Satay Skewers.
Specials: Ikan Bakar (grilled fish with chilli paste in banana leaf), Butter Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk, Hainan Chicken Rice.
Drink: Fresh Green Coconuts opened to order.
We invited media guests to join us on the press preview day on October 19th prior to opening to the public on the 23rd:
9.30am-11am : complimentary Hong Kong breakfast of steamed dim sum and Chinese tea, an informal tour and introduction to the Ekachai kitchen and team.
6pm-9pm: complimentary tasting of our menu, informal tour and introduction to the Ekachai kitchen and team and drinks at the Flat Iron Square bar.

About Ekachai:
Ekachai was established in Liverpool Street in 1999 by schoolfriends Thomas Tjong and Sidney Tsang from Hong Kong who could not find their favourite streetfood dishes in London. Today they have three London restaurants (Liverpool Street, Wandsworth and Selfridges) and looking forward to bring their authentic dishes to the new development of Flat Iron Square feeding the Capital’s continued appetite for traditional Malay, Thai and Cantonese dishes.

“I wanted Londoners to be able to come to a place with a mix of great music, artisan food and bars, with a vibe of European urban outdoor markets and squares. A space that will keep evolving and visitors keep discovering. It is a large site so we are able to explore many things. We are looking at arts ideas and bringing in a flea market with vintage clothing and other interesting stalls. I started my first business, a mushroom farm, in these arches, so it is a fortunate and happy coincidence I am able to open them up again for a new venture following a great refurbishment by the Landlord, Network Rail”.

EKACHAI Launch Interactive Wall

Ekachai Interactive Wall

Our client Ekachai is completely refurbishing the interior of their Wandsworth restaurant that is located on the upper concourse of Wandsworth’s Southside Shopping Centre. Narrative, the design team, are making huge changes such as covering the roof in bamboo and hanging almost fifty light fixtures imported from Indonesia.

As well as a new look there will also be a new menu with additions such as ever popular Cantonese Char Sui Bao, Thai chicken classic Kai Krapow and Roti Canai fried Malaysian pancake. The re-launch is planned for early July however between now and then they have to fully cover the exterior in large dull hoarding.

To reimagine this temporary drawback we commissioned The Outside Collective to create an interactive mural running along the entire length of the 13m hoarding. Ekachai also provided the collateral of 500 meals for us to giveaway.

Our focus for the interactive wall was to reflect the profile of Ekachai; a Southeast Asian restaurant specialising in authentic Cantonese, Thai and Malay street food served in an informal, honest and fun environment. The cuisines’ styles were illustrated by a scene from each area in geographical order moving from morning until night. We then made these scenes interactive to promote engagement and social media promotion of the re-launch. The Hong Kong scene features über-sized chopsticks, Thailand conical hats and Malaysia a becak bicycle. Instructions on how to use the wall are positioned at the top of the mural, to the side and also on an A board.

Yesterday Fourteen Ten spent time at Southside wearing Ekachai uniforms and encouraging passers-by to pose with the items on the wall. Some interacted, some didn’t but the first thing people did when walking past was to look at the wall, stop and smile many enquiring about the re-launch of the restaurant. We also spoke to lots of customers who were disappointed (and some angry!) to find their local restaurant was temporarily closed which was an interesting observation on numbers of regular diners.

Ekachai Malaysian Supper Club with Norman Musa

Our client South East Asian restaurant Ekachai are hosting a Malaysian evening with award-winning Malaysian Chef Norman Musa.

The event is on June 13th from 6.30pm at Ekachai Liverpool Street, costs £35 per person and features 6 courses of street-style Malaysian dishes featuring Chicken Loh Kei Bak, Venison Rendang and Lobster Laksa.


South East Asian restaurant Ekachai specialises in the overlapping street-style dishes of Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong and on June 13th the restaurant is highlighting their authentic Malay dishes with the launch of their Supper Club.

For their first Supper Club Ekachai has partnered with award-winning Malaysian Chef Norman Musa to create a 6-course menu of authentic Malaysian street-food inspired dishes. The menu will be cooked by Norman Musa on the evening and served on at their Liverpool Street restaurant on June 13th from 7-10.30pm for £35 per person.

Authentic Malaysian Dishes on Ekachai’s current menu include: Chicken Satay, Nasi Goreng, Char Kew Teow, Mee Goreng, Hokkien Mee, Laksa, Kway Teow Noodle Soup, Sambal Udang, Chicken Kapitan, Rendang, Nyonya Curry, Kangkung Goreng, Malaysian Sweet Pancake.

Supper Club Menu:

On Arrival: Fusion Canapés
Starters: Chicken Loh Kei Bak (pieces of chicken cooked with five spice powder and crunchy vegetables wrapped with tofu sheet, shallow fried and served with mild chilli dipping sauce) and Seafood Salad (a medley of seafood served with papaya, mango and pomelo cold salad with exotic Asian Fusion dressing)
Main Course: Venison Rendang (delicious rending infused with lemon grass, galangal and spices slowly simmered with venison) and Lobster Laksa (noodles in lobster broth served with bean sprouts, greens and boiled egg) and Ayam Percik (chicken thigh pieces marinated in turmeric and lemongrass, grilled and served with thick coconut and lemongrass gravy) all served with Jasmine Rice
Dessert: Tofu Fa (soya panna cotta with orange and strawberry compote served with crushed Oreo biscuits)

Ekachai is an honest, authentic and affordable restaurant that provides the real taste of Asia in a relaxed and casual environment. Ekachai was established in 1999 by two Hong Kong born restauranteurs with the concept of creating a menu combining their favourite childhood dishes.
